Episode 10 – Lauren Massa, Velveteen Echo Darling

We are finally back after a few crazy/busy months with an eerily haunting Halloween-themed episode of The Gallery podcast. This episode was recorded entirely in the dark during a very gloomy and foggy night with Houston musician Lauren Massa, frontwoman for Velveteen Echo and all-around indie darling (we know there’s no way you all would know that, but we wanted to get in the Halloween spirit by turning off all the lights).

Lauren stopped by to talk to us about her musical journey and eventual evolution as an artist, the overwhelming support and praise her band has garnered in the Houston music scene, interesting facts about her music-reading abilities, one of her guiltiest pleasures, and the release of her band’s debut EP Submarine on Miss Champagne Records. Of course, this wouldn’t be a proper Halloween episode without a few tales of spooky encounters with spirits from Lauren’s childhood and Claudia’s bachelorette trip in the New Orleans French Quarter.

Since their memorable performance earlier this year at In Bloom Music Festival and the release of their highly-anticipated EP, the members of Velveteen Echo have positioned themselves to become favorites amongst the local music scene. With their diverse audience, striking melodies, and swoon-worthy performances, Velveteen Echo continues to delight critics and fans alike.

Velveteen Echo will be performing on Sunday, November 4th at White Oak Music Hall alongside Avi Buffalo.

Q: In this episode, Lauren talked about one of her first encounters with secular music. Which album (given to Lauren in high school by a neighborhood kid) served as her introduction to secular music?

Bonus: Claudia mentioned songs from this album appeared on which Pandora station?

Happy Halloween, and as always, happy listening!

Following the episode, Lauren and Claudia carved pumpkins and shared ghost tales creepy enough to be in an issue of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
