Episode 9 – Anita Hassan, Reporter for the Voiceless

Trigger Warning: This episode of The Gallery contains discussions about sexual assault and violence, which may be triggering to survivors.

The Gallery Podcast is back this month with another episode featuring former Houston Chronicle investigative reporter, Anita Hassan. Anita joined us to talk about her special series for the Houston Chronicle, which explored the sexual assault case that gripped the City of Houston and called into question the criminal justice system that let a rapist go free on multiple occasions.

On this episode, we discussed the case of Jenny*, a rape victim who was incarcerated by the state of Texas for her refusal to testify against her abuser the day of the trial. We also went over her astounding findings during the investigation and interviews with the women who were sexually assaulted, the process of reporting the stories of the numerous voiceless women, the failures of the justice system, and the police officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, crime-victim advocates, victims’ friends and family who contributed to Anita’s investigation into this case.
