The Gallery Podcast welcomes the amazingly talented Jessi Bowman (co-founder of FLATS and photographer extraordinaire) for a one-on-one interview. Since its inception, FLATS has become a platform for Houston-based and visiting photographers to connect and share their art pieces in unconventional and intimate settings. Jessi and her husband, Cris Skelton, have made it their mission to introduce Houston patrons to a collection of photographic art in a non-traditional way while supporting artistic collaboration in the Houston photo community.
Jessi graciously joined us to discuss the inspiration behind the nomadic photography exhibition series that is FLATS, Houston’s relationship with photography, the artists and curators who have become an integral part of the FLATS community, and the need for spaces with accessible art.
As highlighted in the FLATS mission statement:
Each FLATS exhibition features at least two artists who have not previously worked together in an effort to foster closer relationships between photographers working within the community and to provide a platform to amplify local voices. Houston artists bring diverse perspectives to American photography, a result of their origins from all corners of the globe and all spectrums of creed, gender, sexuality, and lifestyle. FLATS exists at the intersection of their unique journeys, providing a space to explore their similarities and celebrate their differences in dynamic settings that are outside of the traditional ways to experience art.
FLATS will be hosting a Movie Night on Saturday, August 17, 2019 featuring works from Lina Dib, Preetika Rajgariah, JooYoung Choi, Krista Steinke, and Britt Thomas. The program, co-curated by Peter Lucas and Emily Peacock, comprises a variety of creative constructions involving identity, memory, and imagination. The 50-minute screening will take place at 3809 Rosedale St., Houston, TX 77004 and will begin at 8:30 p.m., with a brief Q&A with the curators and artists taking place after the screening. Come soak in a kiddie pool to beat the heat, sip on a beverage, and enjoy this one-night movie event!
